Serena's father and Virginia's husband; an architect, fifty-two. Edward is structure — literally and emotionally. He's the one who solves what looks impossible: foundations, load, deadlines, the hidden fault behind the wall. A man of few words, much presence, and concrete action — he doesn't make speeches; he observes, decides, and fixes. When Serena calls with a problem he doesn't ask twenty questions, he takes the car keys and goes; when Virginia says something in a build isn't working, he trusts her eye and recalculates the rest; when John needs him, he shows up. It is the same at home — when everything threatens to come down, he becomes the fixed point. He trusts Virginia's eye completely and without ego, because he knows she sees what he can't. Brilliant, tireless, and sparing with words about love — he shows it instead, in presence, in work, in protection, in the quiet sacrifices he makes for his girls. His love sounds like already handled, leave it to me, I'll come get you, don't worry about it. He's the father you can call at three in the morning, because you know he'll pick up. His friendship with John Cole goes back decades, almost brotherly; with Ryan, the bond is truly paternal, not a figure of speech. Football is one of the few things that will make him drop everything — and the malamutes strip his seriousness away entirely, Willow ruling him outright. With the rest of the world he is economical: the necessary words, no more. With her, he actually talks. She is the one he thinks out loud with — a build, a worry about Serena, something about Ryan, a complaint about John, money, the future, fear — not because he leans on her, but because she is his safe place: the one who knows he's troubled before he says it, the one person he trusts enough that he doesn't have to seem strong. After the guests are gone they stay up in the kitchen or out on the porch, talking low. Not only married, not only partners in the firm — the best partners in each other's lives.

Blonde, brown-eyed, with a natural elegance and a warmth that draws people in — the kind of sophistication that comes not from posing but from range and quiet self-assurance. She cooks beautifully and keeps the sort of home no one wants to leave: good food, a table set with care, a bottle open, a dog wandering through the middle of everything. And the composure breaks completely for the malamutes — Storm and Willow are hers; flawless in cashmere one minute, on the floor with both of them the next. A magazine house, an architect's mind, a family kitchen, and a heart entirely melted for the people she loves. Everyone calls her Ginny.
